Updated:The second most powerful man in the house has been dethroned by a little-known, Tea Party-backed Republican primary challenger.
Eric Cantor's loss is seen by some as the biggest victory of the 2014 campaign season for Tea Party forces.
Chris Stirewalt says, âEric Cantor made a fateful decision, which was he was going to go to war with the Tea Party and he was going to beat hit, he ran negative ads. Well it turned out that the Tea Party beat him.â
He was seen as the second most powerful member of the House of Representatives and a possible successor to the house speaker.
But come November, he will just be referred to as Eric Cantor.
The Republican House majority leader from Virginiaâs 7th district lost his primary election to Tea Party-backed Economics professor David Brat.
Carl Cameron says, "It's a very, very low turnout here, and when itâs a low turnout race that often tends to favor the insurgent. Thatâs very much what appears to have happened here."
Brat earned 56 percent of the vote in a surprising election shake up that Democrats are already pouncing on.
DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released a statement following the results that reads in part quote: "When Eric Cantor, who time and again has blocked common sense legislation to grow the middle class, can't earn the republican nomination; its clear the GOP has redefined 'far right.'"
During his concession speech, Cantor said little about his defeat and instead tried to rally the Republican base.
Rep. Eric Cantor says,"We wanna create a Virginia and America that works for everybody and we need to focus our efforts as conservatives as Republicans on putting forth our conservative solutions."
In the wake of his primary defeat, Eric Cantor is already losing his political clout.
Cantor was scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the National Association of Manufacturers Summit Breakfast and has now been replaced by Delaware Democratic Senator Chris Coons.
