• Jazz up your week at the U of M

The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music Jazz Week starts March 4, 2014 at the University of Memphis.  Concerts will feature guest artists, faculty and student musicians performing jazz classics and today's hottest compositions.  Special guests for the event are drummer Matt Wilson and his quartet and the Temple College Faculty Jazz Sextet.  Bands that will be in concert include Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra, U of M Jazz Singers and the U of M Faculty Birth of the Cool, presenting everything from the big band sound to vocal harmonies.

New York based drummer and Grammy nominee Matt Wilson is one of today's most celebrated jazz artists. He is universally recognized for his musical and melodic drumming style as well as being a gifted composer, bandleader, producer, and teaching artist. Matt's positive energy, sense of humor and ability to explore a broad range of musical settings keeps him in constant demand. In addition, Wilson's dedication to jazz has helped establish him as a beloved world ambassador for the music, on and off the bandstand.

The Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra has a long reputation of musical excellence at the University of Memphis. The ensemble performs a wide range of styles from composers Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington to modern composers such as Jim McNeely and Bob Brookmeyer. The group, which is directed by Jack Cooper, performs and records student compositions, commissions and new works from outside composers.

Under the direction of Tim Goodwin, The U of M Jazz Singers perform music in the tradition of jazz vocal groups from the 1940's to today. The singers also sing original songs and arrangements as well as crossover and ethnic styles.

Faculty Birth of the Cool is a nine piece ensemble that performs the works of Miles Davis, Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Carisi, Gil Evans, as well as original works. Joining them will be Temple College Faculty Jazz Sextet.
