Jessica Chambers' family stands behind investigator, despite DUI arrest

Updated:

Major Barry Thompson is the lead investigator in the Jessica Chambers murder case. Last week, the Panola County Sheriff’s Department employee was arrested on DUI charges by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Despite the recent bump in the road, the Chambers family is standing behind Thompson.

Jessica’s mother, Lisa Daugherty, told FOX13 she was not at all concerned about the arrest.

"No, not really. He was off duty, and it doesn't have anything to do with the case at all," Daugherty said.

According to three attorneys FOX13 spoke to, she may be right.

Those attorneys have told us Thompson's DUI arrest stands almost zero chance of coming up in court to discredit him, if and when Jessica's killer is caught. They said the arrest wouldn't be used in court because it's largely irrelevant.

As for him being removed from his position, legally that remains up to the sheriff. Jessica's Mother told FOX13 removing Barry would be a mistake.

"I don't think he should be removed. Barry has the heart to do what he is doing. Barry should be where he is,” Daugherty said.

Major Barry Thompson has not yet been scheduled to appear in court in Panola County. Neither Thompson nor the Sheriff are commenting on the case.
