    MCS Celebrates ‘National Food Day' at the Central Nutrition Center, Menu Samples and Tours Offer Glance at Child Nutrition Work

    Memphis, Tenn. – On Wednesday, October 24, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Nutrition Services for Memphis City Schools will host National Food Day at the Central Nutrition Center – a 217,000 square foot, state-of-the-art school food preparation center on 14.2 acres at 3176 Jackson Ave.


    Activities include food sampling of USDA approved breakfast, lunch and dinner menu items, a viewing of the district's central kitchen from the observation deck, a tour with display areas in the warehouse, and a presentation on MCS "Farm-to-School" initiatives by Anthony Geraci, executive director of MCS Nutrition Services.  Additionally, farmers who work with MCS on school gardens will be on hand to describe their services, and a representative from MCS Coordinated School Health will setup a booth to discuss ways to start eating healthier foods.

    The event is open to district parents, schools, including those with school gardens and those interested in creating a garden, youth of BRIDGES outreach programs, and the public.  Participants must RSVP at www.foodday.org/.

    Food Day is an annual, nationwide event – a movement to increase healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.  Created by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day is led by food movement leaders and organizations to address health and nutrition, hunger, agricultural policy, animal welfare and farm worker justice. The goal is to improve America's food policies.

    Foods we eat should support good health, but the wrong diet – salty, processed packaged foods, high-calorie sugar-filled drinks, and fast-foods with white bread, fatty factory-farmed meat, and deep fried items – can led to premature deaths from heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Also, the way food is produced can be harmful. Food Day aims to improve the American diet regardless of age, race, income or geographic location.  Individuals are led to ways to gain access to a variety of healthy foods to avoid diet-related health problems in the future.
