MPD officer fights with teen resisting arrest

Update at 4:50:

The Memphis teen involved in the Sunday night fight with a police officer has been identified as 18-year-old DeShannon Smith, according to the Memphis Police Department. Smith has been charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, evading arrest, and resisting official detention.

Video has surfaced on the Internet showing a Memphis Police Department officer fighting with an 18-year-old on Sunday evening.

Police said they arrived to 612 South Parkway Southside Park around 6 p.m. due to a large group of children saying the 18-year-old was "messing" with their friend.

MPD told FOX13 the teen was then detained, as police spoke with the children about the situation.

Soon after that, the officer attempted to arrest the teen, but he did not want to be taken to jail, and when the officer tried putting handcuffs on the teen, he broke free and a fight insinuated between them.

The teen then fought with the officer with one of the handcuffs on his wrist. The officer struck the suspect with closed fists and was then able to subdue the suspect and take him into custody, police said.

According to MPD, this case is under investigation and both the officer and suspect were taken to Regional One.

The identities of the officer and suspect have not been released yet.
