An overturned 18-wheeler halted northbound I-55 traffic in what's known as Malfunction Junction near the I-240 interchange for 2-and-a-half hours.
The Tennessee Department of Transpiration says the tractor trailer overturned at around 2:20 p.m. along with a passenger vehicle, blocking all northbound lanes and forcing the temporary closure of the freeway near South Third Street.
"Two parties were transported to area hospitals in non-critical condition: The driver of the truck and the passenger of the car. Both were in non-critical condition," says Memphis Fire Lt. Wayne Cook.
No hazardous materials were in the truck's cargo.
The sedan was towed away around 3 p.m. and two tow trucks hoisted the 18-wheeler back on its wheels near 4:30 p.m. Afternoon severe thunderstorms with wind gusts in excess of 60 mph delayed the removal of the big rig some 30 minutes later.
Memphis police continue their accident investigation to learn what caused the accident.
Northbound traffic was diverted to alternate routes according to TDOT's Smartmap (http://ww2.tdot.state.tn.us/tsw/smartmap.htm).
