The X Factor announced its final 17 contestants on Tuesday's episode, bringing the "Judges' Homes" round to an end.
The show included a dramatic announcement by Simon Cowell, resulting in there being 17 finalists instead of 16.
"I think I've made a massive mistake, I do," Access Hollywood reported Cowell said after cutting Melanie Amaro. "An hour ago I felt fine, in hindsight, I can feel it in my gut …. I made a big mistake."
Cowell headed to Sunrise, Fla., where The Washington Post stated that he found the 19-year-old singer at home and told her that he had to come and tell her something.
"I want to personally apologize to you and your family for the mistake I made … I'm going to to ask you to come back on the competition."
She accepted, bringing the final number up to 17.
Amaro said that it was "really big, as well as shocking, because the many years I've watched Simon, he has never done something like that. I feel very honored that he came to my home to ask me to come back on the show."
The X Factor announced that the final 17 contestants are:
Girls: Melanie Amaro, Drew Ryniewicz, Rachel Crow, Simone Battle, Tiah Tolliver.
Boys: Brian Bradley, Chris Rene, Marcus Canty, Phillip Lomax.
Groups: The Brewer Boys, InTENsity, Lakoda Rayne, The Stereo Hogzz.

FOX stated that the remaining acts will compete for the chance to be the top finalists in a special live two-and-a-half hour episode on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Then the top finalists from all categories will compete against each other for the first time on Wednesday, Nov. 2, when viewers will get their chance to vote immediately after the show.
