• Sylvia Sheds Convention on the Theatre Memphis Next Stage

Memphis, TN – A.R. Gurney's Sylvia takes a different approach as man's best friend is presented in a different light in the Next Stage at Theatre Memphis production which runs April 5 -21, 2013. A comedy in which an actress portrays a dog found in a New City park centers around Greg and Kate, an upper middle-class, empty-nested couple who take on a stray dog at the husband's insistence. Soon the dog, Sylvia, and Greg bond and are spending a great deal of time together to the dismay of Kate.  Sylvia takes the role of protector and constant companion of Greg very seriously and challenges the loyalty and authority of Kate.  The struggles that ensue create situations that anyone can relate to and emotions everyone has felt. Set in and around New York City, the play takes a journey from a Manhattan apartment to a dog park and even to a therapist's office.

Playing the role of Sylvia is Aliza Moran.  "This is the hardest role I have ever taken on," she says. "There are elements that need to be dog-like but it is such a human experience type of story. The audience has to believe me as a dog, but the dialogue is a real conversation between two beings who really care for one another." Moran's background includes being a company member of the Theatre Memphis professional children's touring troupe, ShoWagon, and that has helped her develop this role according to director Randall Hartzog. "Aliza came into this role naturally. The characters she has created over the years in ShoWagon have given her a unique sense to step away from the ‘acting' and be something other than herself." Other cast members include Tony Isbell as Greg, Bonnie Kourvelas as Kate and Spencer Miller in the swing roles of Tom, Phyllis and Leslie.
