Transportation problems cause headaches for parents

Updated:

The newly combined Shelby County School System is embarking on its second day of classes, and some parents are frustrated over transportation.

Some of the biggest complaints after the first day: late buses to and from school, and long walks to bus stops across busy streets and down streets with no sidewalks.

The Shelby County School system released a statement on its Facebook page that said in part:

"We apologize for any inconveniences you may have experienced today. Please understand the district is working diligently to address these issues to ensure all students arrive at their schools and homes safely and on time..."

The bus transportation schedule, along with bus stop information was handed out at registration to parents and students.

According to the Shelby County website, maximum distances to bus stops are:
 Elementary School - 0.3mi.
 Middle School - 0.7mi.
 High School - 0.7mi.

Parents with questions and concerns, are urged to call the Office of Transportation Services at (901) 321-2280.
