Fizdale joined the franchise in May of 2016.
The Grizzlies are in the middle of one of their worst slides in recent franchise history, and the controversial decision to bench Marc Gasol during Sunday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets was more than likely the tipping point of Monday's decision.
“After a thorough evaluation, I decided a change in course was necessary to move forward and provide the team and organization its best chance at success this season and beyond,” General Manager Chris Wallace said. “Coach Fizdale represented the Grizzlies and City of Memphis proudly, and we wish him well as he continues his career.”
The firing comes after an 8-game losing streak.
Associate head coach, JB Bickerstaff, will serve as the team's interim head coach, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
