In what Memphians have known for a long time ESPN The Magazine is now considering the Memphis Grizzlies as the best franchise out of four of America's top leagues.
In its latest "franchise issue," which hits newsstands Friday, Sept. 20, ESPN The Magazine regards the Grizzlies the top sports franchise in the United States. The magazine has ranked for the past several years America's best franchises in the National Basketball League, National Hockey League, Major League Baseball and the National Football League.
The magazine broke the news on Twitter (The @MemGrizz are the best, Sacramento Kings are the worst & Cam Newton is on a mission. #FranchiseIssue out Friday. pic.twitter.com/XfQyVTgGO1) and a similar post on Facebook.
In the past years the criteria used to rate franchises include the overall fan experience, cost of going to a game, and the team's success relative to ticket prices among other things.
The Grizzlies were ranked fifth in the magazine's 2012 franchise poll, ninth in 2011, and 75th in 2010.
The Grizzlies' meteoric rise in the magazine's franchise rankings have been boosted in recent years by the team's performance in the NBA, including making their first-ever Western Conference Finals appearance in May.
