IKEA announces opening date for Memphis store

Updated:

In less than two weeks, the new Memphis IKEA will open for business.  The grand-opening is set for 9:00 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2016.  This is the first IKEA in the state of Tennessee.

Inside the 271,000 square-foot store, nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items will be available.  In addition to furnishings, a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes and more sustainable options will be available.  Other family-friendly features include a ‘Children’s IKEA’ area in the Showroom, baby care rooms, play areas throughout the store and preferred parking.

The new store brings with it an economic boost to the local economy.  It’s already ushered in more than 500 construction jobs.  Once it opens more than 225 coworkers will join the IKEA Memphis family.

“We have positions posted right now for part-time, and anything above 20 hours a week actually gets full-time benefits-- so we are super excited to be able to announce that,” store manager Trisha Bevering said.  “And we are also hiring for seasonal.”

The store is located along the southwestern side of Interstate-40 near the Germantown Parkway exit.  Even though the new store opens on Dec. 14, customers can begin lining-up at the store as early as Monday, Dec. 12 – 48 hours in advance of the doors’ opening.
