LATEST: Armed Arkansas State suspect identified, charged with aggravated assault



UPDATE: 6:30 p.m. - Brad Kenneth Bartelt has been identified as the gunman in today's incident at Arkansas State University.

The 47-year-old has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Around 1:30 this afternoon. Police say Bartelt drove onto campus and was spotted outside the Reng Student Union with a gun. Shortly thereafter, he was surrounded by authorities.

No shots were fired and nobody was injured. Bartelt was taken into police custody.

Bartelt is being held in the Craighead County Detention Center. He will make an appearance in court Friday afternoon.


UPDATE 4:05 p.m. - The Jonesboro Police Department has identified the armed suspect at Arkansas State University as Brad Bartelt. The 47-year-old was taken into custody after 2:25 p.m. by campus police and local law enforcement.

The incident sparked around 1:30 this afternoon. Police say Bartelt drove onto campus and was spotted outside the Reng Student Union with a gun. Shortly thereafter, he was surrounded by authorities.

No shots were fired and nobody was injured. Bartelt was taken into police custody.

The Arkansas State campus has been closed for the remainder of the day.

Chancellor Tim Hudson will join police for a live press conference at 5 p.m.


UPDATE 3:25 p.m. - The Student Union at Arkansas State remains on lockdown, but all other buildings have been released, according to the school. The campus is closed for the rest of the day.

The lockdown was issued when an armed man drove onto campus around 1:30 p.m. He was taken into custody by campus police and local law enforcement around 2:45 p.m.

UPDATE 3:15 p.m. - The remaining final exams scheduled for today at Arkansas State have been postponed until Wednesday, December 16.

The armed suspect who drove onto the campus has been taken into custody. However, law enforcement is still investigating the scene and the school is still on lockdown.


UPDATE: 2:49 p.m. - According to Jonesboro Police Department, they have the suspect in custody.  

The school remains on lockdown while police investigate the scene. 


UPDATE: 2:45 p.m. - The man who drove onto the Arkansas State campus is armed with a shotgun and has propane tanks in the bed of his truck.

The school's campus remains on lockdown.

UPDATE 2:15 - Bill Smith the Director of Communications at Arkansas State University, tells FOX13 that the student drove on campus and brandished a weapon.

University police responded immediately. Details are minimal, but the school is on lockdown and students have been asked to stay where they are. 


Smith also confirmed there were no shots fired and no one was injured. 

UPDATE 2:03 A male individual drove onto campus and crashed his car into a barrier and he is armed, but no shots have been fired, according to Bill Smith school director of communications. The police are on the scene, according to CNN.

There is a report of an active shooter spotted at the student union at Arkansas State University, according to the school’s Twitter account.

The school has advised everyone to evacuate to the west side of the building and clear the area.
