Man charged in one of Memphis' first homicide of 2016

An arrest has been made in the city’s first homicide of the year.

James Buchanan, 44, is charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault and especially aggravated kidnapping.

On Dec. 31 of 2015, officers responded to a call in the 3900 block of Print Street. When officers arrived they found the victim Paul Maher lying on the ground.

Police said Maher was tied up with duct tape and rope for several days and was physically assaulted. Maher was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

On Jan. 1, the victim was pronounced dead by the hospital staff as a result of his injuries sustained during the attack. 

Investigators said Buchanan turned himself in on Oct. 21 and admitted to breaking into Maher’s home and assaulting him.

Buchanan is due in court Monday.
