• Man dies after being shot in Whitehaven

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Family of a store clerk who was killed Tuesday night in Whitehaven told FOX13 he is Marcel Wicks, a father of nine. 

    FOX13 has obtained still shot of the suspect seconds before Wicks was killed. Owners of the Brothers Deli and Grocery released this still photo of the man who Killed Marcel Wicks behind the checkout counter Tuesday night.

    Tahrir Ismail told FOX13 two men can into the store wanting to buy cigarettes.

    One of those men shot and killed the father of nine.

    “He’s under age so Marcel asked for his ID. He argued with Marcel, so Marcel told him no so he walked out,” Ismail said.

    Memphis police told FOX13 they were called to the store just before 6:30 Tuesday night. Wicks and his wife both close friends of Ismail, worked at the store for the last two weeks.

    “We were gone for 30 minutes, and for something like to happen in 30 minutes is just heartbreaking,” Ismail said.

    Police told FOX13 five people were detained for questioning after the shooting and have since been released.

    “Somebody could just walk in and not give somebody a chance and just shoot him for no reason,” Ismail said.

    Ismail says Wicks was able to fire his gun once, the bullet shattering the glass of this drink cooler. Ismail told FOX13 losing such a close friend has her questioning the future of the store.

    “You didn’t need to come to act like you’re the big man and shoot our clerk our best friend 16, 20 years we have been knowing him just like that,” Ismail said.
