A Marion, Arkansas man will serve several decades in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of his lover.

Dwayne Antonio Smith, 21, pleaded guilty to second degree murder on Friday. The charge stems from an incident on April 21, 2017 in West Memphis.

Police said Smith beat his lover, James Bedford, to death with a hammer.

“We don’t know nothing. All we know is that my baby is dead,” Bedford’s mother, Teresa Gant, told FOX13 earlier this year.

A warrant was immediately issued for Smith’s arrest. A police captain told FOX13 he had just gotten out of jail for a domestic violence charge involving the same victim, days before the murder.

Dwayne Smith was received a 50-year prison sentence for the murder, and he was sentenced to an additional 16 years for an unrelated robbery charge.
