MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Mayor Jim Strickland tweeted Monday morning that they City of Memphis will throw its name in the hat to become the new headquarters for Amazon.

Amazon is searching for a second headquarters location, promising to spend more than $5 billion on whatever site is chosen in North America.

The new headquarters will be a "full equal" to its Seattle location and could bring as many as 50,000 jobs, Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said.

The company estimates it added around $38 billion to Seattle's economy between 2010 and 2016.

The company would only say it is looking for metropolitan areas with populations of more than a million that could have the potential to attract top technical talent.

Amazon will hire thousands of workers for the new location, but people working at the Seattle location will also have the option of seeking a transfer to the new site.
