Memphis hotel developer involved in West Coast scandal

A corruption scandal on the West Coast might impact the Mid-South.

Memphis hotel developer John Wessman, along with real estate developer and former Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet are facing bribery charges in Riverside County, California.

Wessman is based in Palm Springs, but is involved in construction of hotels in Downtown Memphis.

On Thursday, the Riverside County District Attorney announced Wessman and the other developer paid Pougnet $375,000 between 2012 and 2014 for his support of their project in Palm Springs.

The Wessman development announced John Wessman will be stepping down and retiring.

We are working to learn if any of his projects in Memphis will be affected due to the charges.
