Ole Miss mascot officially changed to the Landshark

Updated:

OXFORD, Miss. - After a campus-wide vote by students, the University of Mississippi Chancellor announced the mascot is officially changed to the Landshark.

Students voted on whether to keep the previous mascot of the black bear.

The Landshark and the term "Fins Up" have become widely known and used by students, staff, and athletes alike.

Officials say support for the mascot change was unanimous.

Rebel the Bear will be retired.

Athletics will be designing and launching the Landshark mascot. They hope to unveil it before the 2018 season.

Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter said in a release, "We are - and always will be - the Ole Miss Rebels. And I am asking all Rebels to unite around our new Landshark mascot."
