A string of auto thefts at an apartment complex in Memphis has many residents on edge.
There have been several auto thefts at the College Park Apartments in the last few weeks.
Resident Monique Dendy said it is regular routine to leave her car running in the morning.
“I come outside I say around 6:15, 6:20 to warm my car up,” Dendy said. “I crank my car up go back inside.”
Monday morning was different.
“I say like five minutes later my daughter comes out and says, ‘Mom your car is gone’ and I’m like you’re kidding me and she said ‘No, your car is gone,” Dendy said.
Dendy said her daughter heard someone drive off in her Silver 2006 Infiniti FX35.
Dendy said this is not the first she has heard of an auto theft in her neighborhood.
“Well my neighbors next door told me their car was stolen right before Christmas and I wasn’t even aware of it,” Dendy said.
FOX13’s Lauren Coleman reached out to MPD and they said there have been three auto thefts in the neighborhood in just under a month. All of the thefts came from cars running unattended.
Neighbors said crime in the area is increasing.
“It’s not just cars that have been stolen over here,” Neighbor Tammy Carter said. “They’ve broken into my car several times.”
FOX13’s Lauren Coleman did some more digging and discovered there have been 485 crime calls within a mile of the area in the last 90 days.
Dendy said she hopes police will be able to find her car and she said she has learned a valuable lesson.
“If it’s cold outside, just stay in your car,” Dendy said.
“Warm it up. Do what you have to do, but never leave your car running.”
MPD said if you do not have a garage, grab your coat and a hot cup of coffee to knock off the chill as you warm up your car.
