MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A 15-year-old murder suspect is now in custody.
Teryona Winton was wanted in connection to the murder of 17-year old Deago Brown.
Brown was shot and killed in Binghampton, outside a corner store, on April 3.
Winton was arrested Tuesday and is currently locked up at the Juvenile Detention Center.
Police developed her as the suspect a week after the homicide. She eluded police for weeks.
The juvenile warrant issued for her arrest was for first degree murder.
Her first juvenile court hearing is Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Charges will be confirmed or amended at that hearing.
Deago’s mother told FOX13 she was relieved when she got word the 15-year old suspect Teryona Winton was finally arrested.
“I didn't worry about it, but I was always praying that she would get caught because of the things that happened,” said Brown. “If she got caught, she wouldn’t go and hurt nobody else, and did what she done to my son.”
Police said the murder was gang related.
“It probably was,” said Brown, who does not hide the fact that Deago associated with a certain group. “In our community there's just so much gang related [activity], they just get involved in it so young.”
Carol still grieves for her son, but she relies heavily on her faith.
“[God] gave me peace with it, and I can move on.”
The peace is why she said she’s eager to meet her son’s killer.
“I’ll share the gospel with her. Tell her Jesus died on the cross for her sins. He loves her so much, and I forgive her as a mom.”
It will likely be months before a decision is made on whether or not the suspect, Winton, will be charged as an adult.
