MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Memphis mother is behind bars after she admitted to police she shot and killed her boyfriend, but she said it was an accident, as she was only trying to protect herself insider her Robinhood Parks Apartment.
Barely speaking above a whisper, Franchesca Gray faced Judge William Turner Wednesday inside a Shelby County courtroom. A far cry from the screams her cousin Jeanette Rivers heard the day before.
"All I heard was, ' told you don't put your hands on me no more. I told you don't put your hands on me no more,' Jeanette Rivers recalled.

Gray took matters into her own hands admitting to detectives she shot her boyfriend Amos Oyeleye. The 29-year-old said she was assaulted by Oyeleye early Tuesday while her cousin and two of her children slept nearby. The mother of five, said she pulled her gun to scare her boyfriend--when she accidentally fired. Domestic abuse, she and her family told police, was nothing new.
"Just before Thanksgiving he put her in the hospital," Rivers said. "He took her to Kansas and broke her jaw."
Rivers said Oyeleye's past run-ins with the law further explain why she feels Gray feared for her safety.
"I don't care how she tried to spin it, she wa scared of him," Rivers said.
Looking into Oyeleye's background, FOX13 discovered Gray had to undergo surgery in November after Gray told police she was severely beaten by him. Years before, Oyeleye spent time behind bars for dragging his then-girlfriend by the hair down the street. And in 2011, he was charged with forcing a woman and several teens into prostitution.
The victim’s family did not want to speak with FOX13.
As for Gray, her cousin said her children who range in age from 2 to 11 years old are being taken care of, while the family works to post Gray's $150,000 bond.
Franchesca Gray is set to appear back in court February 21. Ironically, that was the same day Amos Oyeleye was scheduled to answer to domestic assault charges.
