MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Legislation to honor longtime state legislator Barbara Cooper, of Memphis, is awaiting Tenn. Gov. Bill Lee's signature.
Cooper passed away in 2022. She was the oldest-serving lawmaker in Tennessee history.
The bill, sponsored by Tenn. Representative Torrey Harris (Memphis), will rename the educational facility at the John S. Wilder youth development center.
The new name will be called "The Barbara Ward Cooper Education Center."
Harris said, in words on the House of Representatives floor in Nashville, that naming a facility aimed at helping youths fits Cooper's work.
"She taught a lot of us in the Legislature about being fair, about opportunities, about how to treat people," he said.
"... She was an educator inside and outside of the classroom and I hope that every young person who graduates with their high school diploma from this school remembers what it is like to get a second chance."
