MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Press Release) — As part of their annual ‘Grizz Goes Back to School’ Campaign, the Memphis Grizzlies will be hosting multiple events within the Mid-South community from Sept. 21 – 25.
This week is designed to reinforce the importance of education, assist teachers in the classroom and encourage all students to start the new school year off right and strive to be their very best.
Memphis Grizzlies staff and special guests will make appearances at events throughout the week.
Grizz Fuel
WHO: Grizzlies Team Chef, GrizzFit Coaches, Grizzlies Prep Students
WHAT: Grizz Fuel promoting healthy living through proper nutrition
WHEN: Monday, September 21 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
WHERE: Virtually on Zoom
NOTES: Grizz Fuel promotes healthy living and lifestyles; with hands-on learning on how to prepare and cook healthy and affordable foods. Stephen McAfee, Grizzlies Team Chef will demonstrate how to prepare three different healthy snacks. Students will pick up the ingredients and supplies at Grizzlies Prep prior to the event. Following the cooking portion, GrizzFit Coaches will teach a full body workout.
Read to Achieve Virtual Classroom Visit
WHO: Belle Forest Community School Students, Grizzlies and International Paper Employees
WHAT: Motivating students to engage their education by reading
WHEN: Tuesday, September 22 from 2:15 – 3:00 p.m.
WHERE: Virtually on Microsoft Teams
NOTES: The Grizzlies Read to Achieve program, presented by International Paper in association with KPMG, is an incentive-driven program that motivates students to develop a life-long love for reading and promotes the value of literacy. Grizzlies employees and IP volunteers will read books to students. Following the reading, students will be eligible to win Grizzlies prizes with a Q&A.
BizTown Renovation Days 1 & 2
WHO: Grizzlies employee volunteers
WHAT: BizTown Room Renovation
WHEN: Wednesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 24 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
WHERE: Junior Achievement Building
NOTES: Jr. Achievement BizTown is a financial literacy program that helps students connect the dots between classroom learning, and implementing it into everyday life. BizTown combines in-class training with visits to a fully interactive simulated town facility where students have to manage the town accordingly. Biztown helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. Through the experiential learning process, students are actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, expressing curiosity, solving problems and assuming responsibility. Grizzlies employees will be revamping their Biztown storefront over the course of two days.
Math Hoops
WHO: Gordon Achievement Academy Students
WHAT: Using the game of basketball to help teach kids math and problem solving
WHEN: Friday, September 25 from 12:30 – 1:15 p.m.
WHERE: Virtually on Microsoft Teams
NOTES: Math Hoops is a comprehensive community program, featuring a basketball board game, mobile app, and curriculum, that allows students to learn fundamental math skills through the game of basketball. The Grizzlies will host students from Gordon Achievement Academy. Coach Calvin, Chief Academic Officer at Learn Fresh will walk the students through various NBA Math Breaks and give them a sneak peek at the new Math Hoops virtual board game. At the end of the session, students will receive a special surprise.

WHAT: Incentive-based truancy reduction program designed to help keep youth in school and engaged in the classroom
WHEN: 2020-21 school year
WHERE: Five Shelby County Schools
NOTES: rePRESENT Every Day, presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee is an incentive-based truancy reduction program designed to help keep youth in school and engaged in the classroom. This program was created due to chronic absenteeism within numerous schools in Shelby County. With school looking different this year we especially want to encourage students to continue being engaged in the classroom. The Grizzlies will be tipping off this program with the release of a PSA video reminding students to continue to go to school and be engaged in the classroom despite the circumstances. Students that show up to class everyday will have the opportunity to win prizes.
