RIPLEY, Tenn. - A 17-year-old boy was killed and another teen boy was injured during a drive-by shooting Thursday night in Ripley, an official said.

According to District Attorney Mark Davidson, the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. in the city's Northcrest subdivision.

FOX13 spoke with a man who lives in that neighborhood and he said he saw the teen’s body lying on the pavement.

"It sounded like some firecrackers," Len Poe said.

He said he was sitting on his porch, listening to his radio when he heard the barrage of a gunfire.

"Then I heard somebody hollering," he said.

He said he saw a young man lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

FOX13 asked a Ripley teen if he knew the victim.

"No, but I do know some people who did know him," Ripley High sophomore Cameron Smith said. "A real tough day for a lot of people."

Officials did not confirm the identity of the teen killed but students and faculty at Ripley High began attaching balloons and flowers to a football banner on the school's campus of senior DeMarcus Barnes.

"It just hurt my heart so bad," said Lacay Crew, a parent of a Ripley High student. "I hate to hear about shootings, period."

Cameron Smith said Friday’s senior night for the football team will no longer be an evening of festivities but a night of mourning. He has a message for the gunman.

"I just don't understand why somebody would ruin their lives so quickly," Smith said. "At such a young age. There's so many things you could do besides that. You could be such a better person."

Shawn Kimble, the Lauderdale County Schools Superintendent, provided the following statement regarding the deadly school:

"Senseless tragedies like this are all too common in our region, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students. We kindly ask for your continued prayers for our student body and the entire community as we navigate this difficult time. Most importantly, we ask that you keep the family of this student in your thoughts and prayers as they cope with the tragic loss of their loved one."

Ripley is about 60 miles northeast of Memphis.

Anyone with information they believe may lead to an arrest is asked to call the Ripley Police Department.
