'Black Lives Matter' protest escalates, marchers take over I-40 bridge

A protest intended to remain in downtown Memphis Sunday evening escalated quickly, with the Hernando de Soto Bridge forcing to be shut down for hours.

The Memphis Police Department along with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol have were throughout Memphis attempting to keep the protests peaceful since 6 p.m. Sunday.

After thousands of protesters marched throughout the streets of downtown, they made their way on to the Hernando de Soto Bridge, with the bridge having to be shut down immediately.

Photos obtained by FOX13 show some protesters climbing on top of trucks, who were stopped on the I-40 bridge.
