I-40 BRIDGE: 100% of top plate fractured on bridge steel beam, TDOT says

MID-SOUTH — Tennessee Department of Transportation officials have confirmed the steel beam fracture on the I-40 bridge includes 100 percent of the top plate and 20 percent of the bottom plate.

The bridge remains closed to traffic after the fracture was discovered during a routine inspection.

The fracture is in a steel support beam that is critical to the structure of the bridge, officials said.

TDOT and the Arkansas Department of Transportation both share responsibility for the bridge and are working to evaluate the damage and plan repairs.

The bridge will remain closed until it can be reopened safely, officials said.

All traffic is being detoured to I-55 over the Mississippi River.

Last week, an ARDOT official said the repairs could take months.
