3 charged after shooting in Oxford, police say

OXFORD, Miss. — Three men are behind bars after a shooting in Oxford that left one person severely injured.

Oxford Police responded to multiple reports of gunshots in the 200 block of Pegues Road on Oct. 12.

An investigation revealed around 25 shots were fired.

One person received a life-threatening injury, police said.

Three people are in custody, identified as Deshawn Lewis, 26, of Oxford; Aaron Pomerlee, 25, of Oxford; and Shawntez Draper, 30, of Oxford.

Lewis was charged with Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon, Pomerlee was charged with Accessory After the Fact, and Draper was charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Synthia Gilliam lives on Pegues Road in Oxford, and she’s mad. While she didn’t get hurt, she said she’s still paying the price.

“A whole lot of shots thank the lord there wasn’t no bodies with those shots just a bunch of vehicles being shot up,” Gilliam said.

Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen told FOX13 the shooting erupted because a group of adults got into a fight over a backpack. More than two dozen shots fired in all. There was still a spent bullet in front of Gilliam’s apartment.

“Very close to home,” Gilliam said. “My car and it could have been my life and I don’t know what is going on.”

Again, several people are in custody, but there is one man police are looking for, his name is Denario Buchanan.
