HOLLY SPRINGS, MISS. — Police in Mississippi is investigating after they told FOX13 a four-year-old shot a one-year-old with an assault rifle.
It happened Sunday afternoon in Holly Springs. FOX13 spoke with the family and neighbors.
The family said the shooting happened on Ridgecrest drove on the East side of Holly Springs. Police told FOX13′s Tom Dees they are still trying to figure out how the four-year-old got hold of the .223 caliber AR-15 assault rifle and shot the one-year-old girl in the hand.
Catressa Malone lives next door to where the shooting happened and she said she doesn’t know the family.
“It just breaks my heart as a parent. It truly breaks my heart as a parent to see them suffer,” Malone said.
Family members who live in the area told FOX13 that they don’t want to speak other than to say that the 1-year-old is going to be okay. Neighbors said that they are praying for the child.
“My heart truly goes out to the parents and the auntie that was here and we definitely will be praying for the baby and hope she has a speedy recovery,” Malone said.
Police said the child is recovering at Le Bonheur. They said her mother was not home at the time of the shooting, but had left the child in the care of her sister.
“I couldn’t imagine what she is going through, but I will definitely be keeping her and the baby both in my prayers.” Malone said.
Both child protective services and Holly Springs Police are investigating.
There are no charges at this time.
