MEMPHIS, TENN. — The CDC said vaccinated students and faculty can return to classrooms without a mask this fall, but now the American Academy of Pediatrics is pushing back.
It recommends everyone over the age of two wear masks at school, regardless of vaccination status.
What does Shelby County Schools plan to do?
SCS said they’re still finalizing their policy and will announce it soon. It has parents waiting to see what their kids will expect when school starts in just a few weeks.
“At first I was a little worried, so I did virtual learning last year up until this year, but now I’m a bit more easy about it,” said Tyren Goodman, an SCS parent.
Tyren Goodman’s kids will be fourth and fifth graders this fall. After more than a year of virtual learning she’s ready to send them back into the classroom.
“My kids know to wear their masks, don’t take it off, so I’m really at ease with it,” said Goodman.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said vaccinated students and faculty do not need to wear a mask in the classroom, but the American Academy of Pediatrics is calling on the CDC to reconsider.
“There’s a concern we have a big group of kids under 12 who are not vaccinated, and will the virus run rampant? I think the answer is we don’t know,” said Nick Hysmith, MD/ LeBonheur Children’s Hospital Infectious Disease Specialist.
Doctor Nick Hysmith said the local back-to-school task force is finalizing their recommendations. He believes vaccinated faculty do not need to wear masks, but kids are still in question.
“I 100% think if you’re vaccinated, you’re safe to be without a mask in schools, but I believe there will be a lot of other issues that will play into that, whether or not that will actually be possible,” said Hysmith.
As for Goodman, she’s confident Shelby County Schools will make the best choice to keep her kid’s safe.
“If they were younger I’d be a little worried, but them being older, I’m OK with it. I’m comfortable,” said Goodman.
Shelby County Students return to school in three weeks. Some schools in the Mid-South start as soon as next week.
