Apartment residents accuse towing company of fraudulent behavior

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Residents of two Memphis apartment complexes said they walked out the door Saturday morning and found their cars were missing.

Those cars, they found out, were towed, and they said without reason.

But the problems didn’t stop there.

FOX13’s Winnie Wright was there this morning as they went to pick up their cars and got a look at the fees.

“They charged me $125,” said Teresa Marr. “They said $30 a day, and they charged me almost $200.”

Marr said she woke up Saturday morning and her car was gone, so she called police.

She tracked it down to Superior Automotive and Towing, but when she tried to pick it up, she was empty handed.

“They are open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday,” she said. “About the time I found out where my car was, they had closed on me.”

Marr said she got charged a $30 fee on top of the towing fees.

A sign outside called it a “storage fee.”

We were there Sunday morning as Marr picked up her car.

“I think it’s robbery without a gun and I feel that it’s harassment,” Marr said.

Marr said Superior towed her car from the Trails Apartments on Moriah Trail because, they said, she was double-parked.

She said she wasn’t.

“I got out here and asked for proof of where I parked, and they haven’t shown me proof," she said “They said they don’t have email.”

“I ran in the house to get my son,” said Laquisha Noel. “It wasn’t even like 5 minutes.”

The $185 Noel spent on the tow fee was supposed to be her rent money.

She lives at Highland Meadows on Airways.

She said she got to the lot at just before 11 a.m. Saturday to pick up her car.

“I asked them, ‘can I get my car,’” Noel said. “They were like, ‘nah, we’re closed.’”

We went inside to ask Superior about these claims, “do you have a manager here? I’m with FOX13.”

They told us managers wouldn’t be in until Monday, so we left a message.

We stopped by Highland Meadows Apartments to ask the staff if they have told security they should call Superior towing if anybody was not parked inside a parking spot.

But the door was locked, and the sign said they’re closed.

The leasing office at the Trails also appeared to be closed.

We looked up Superior Automotive and Towing on the BBB’s Mid-South’s website.

They had an A- rating.
