The Black Wall Street: Author and actor seeks to bring wealth, financial literacy to Memphis communities

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One actor and author is hoping to bring financial literacy to the Mid-South.

Hill Harper, known for his roles on CSI: NY, Limitless, and The Good Doctor, is coming to the Bluff City as part of The Black Wall Street 30-day financial literacy tour.

The tour commemorates the Tulsa Massacre that destroyed the original Black Wall Street in 1921.

Part of the tour’s goal is to help create wealth in Memphis communities that face overwhelming poverty.

Hill’s visit will focus on areas in South Memphis, Hickory Hill, Raleigh and Frayser.

A new Black Wall Street app debuts June 1.

The app will offer a digital wallet for peer-to-peer payments and the ability to trade crytocurrencies.

Harper told FOX13 he’s hoping to attracted “unbanked” consumers while also getting the attention of investors looking for a black-owned site for cryptocurrency purchasing.

Unbanked households do not have a bank account or financial institution.

In Memphis, 40 percent of the metro area is unbanked or underbanked. That’s about 90,000 - 120,000 households.

Harper told FOX13 that Shelby County can do much better.

“There’s a window of opportunity to move people forward quicker and actually build wealth,” he said.

Harper said his goal is to help the dollar recirculate for much longer in communities, which will create jobs and businesses.

“We can literally change the wealth gap immediately,” he said.

Ten years ago Harper wrote a book called “The Wealth Cure” on how to fix the wealth gap. He told FOX13 the technology didn’t exist back then like it does now to “scale the impact.”
