MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Getting access to healthcare can be difficult for the elderly or anyone who doesn’t have a car.
That’s why a brand-new medical center specifically for seniors opened on Wednesday in Orange Mound.
Leaders with the Dedicated Senior Medical Center on Lamar Ave. said it’s all about bringing personalized care to the elderly, especially those facing multiple health challenges.
“There’s a lot of seniors living in this area and this is a senior facility,” Marvin Harris of Orange Mound said. “This way, you don’t have to go into the other clinics or emergency rooms and sit around waiting.”
Harris was the first patient Wednesday at the new center.
He’s visited other dedicated senior medical centers before, but now he can continue his care closer to home.
“They always stay in touch with you, and they always check to make sure you have your medicine,” Harris said.
Associate Chief Medical Officer Robert DeColli said the clinic offers same-day telemedicine and walk-in appointments.
He said the doctors even give out their personal numbers to patients and encourage them to call if they have questions about their health.
“We want to deal with their issues before they become a problem and they need emergency care,” DeColli said.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said the pandemic has proven how critical it is people have access to quality care.
“That is what’s so great about this concept: they’re actually bringing the care to the people,” Strickland said.
The other two Dedicated Senior Medical Centers in Memphis are in Whitehaven and East Memphis.
