Collierville, Germantown oppose government consolidation

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — As Shelby County continues to discuss a merger and consolidation charter with the city of Memphis, two local suburbs have expressed their opposition to the plan.

Both Germantown and Collierville approved resolutions Monday night opposing the merger, records show.

Bartlett will consider a similar resolution on Tuesday.

Records show other local municipalities including Lakeland and Arlington are set to consider similar resolutions.

A merger of Memphis and Shelby County governments would affect the services the suburbs share with the county.

A local councilman said consolidation of the governments would have tremendous benefits for the local economy.
