Collierville mass shooting sparks interest in carrying a firearm

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. — Collierville and surrounding areas remain on edge as they continue to process the shooting at Kroger that injured 14 people and claimed one life.

“Stuff like this happens a lot, but not here,” said Izac Parrish.

Parrish is right. According to the Gun Violence Archive, the mass shooting at Kroger Thursday is one of 526 in the U.S. this year.

“It hits hard because this is a small town and a lot of people know everyone,” Parrish said.

Parish said he is on high alert when doing everyday tasks, like running into the gas station after this shooting.

“Just be more aware of your surroundings,” said Parrish.

And he’s not alone. Jonathon Cross, the owner of Dauntless Tactical Training, a firearms training academy, says the mass shooting has sparked interest in carrying.

“I had people asking ‘Mr. Cross, have you seen the news? I’m ready to get a gun,’ and I had a couple students say, ‘can you meet me at the gun store Friday morning?” Cross told FOX13.

Cross encourages people to use the acronym ALIVE to protect themselves in violent situations. It stands for Assess, Leave, Impede, Violence, and Expose.

“You are your own first responder. I would say go beyond run, hide, fight and ALIVE and prepare yourself to immediately deal with a situation,” said Cross.

In conjunction with training to protect yourself, Cross says it’s important to be vigilant while in public.

“When I go into places, oh, I can hide behind that. That can stop bullets, that can not. I can barricade there,” said Cross.

They are tools Parrish said he plans to use moving forward.

“Just trust your gut and things like that,” said Parrish.

If you’re interested in going through mass shooting drills, the Collierville Police Department said they are willing to offer them.
