CrimeStoppers Memphis increases rewards to $2,000 to help solve murders

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — CrimeStoppers Memphis is increasing rewards to $2,000 to help solve more killings in the city.

According to a release from the agency, tipsters can receive $2,000 in cash for tips leading to arrests in local murders.

The amount was previously $1,000.

The decision to double the money was made by the agency’s board of directors due to a rise in the murder rate in Memphis and Shelby County over the last few years.

As of June 7, 103 murders have been committed, a 13 percent increase over last year, according to the release.

Suspects have been arrested in about half of those killings, five with the help of CrimeStoppers tips.

Executive director Buddy Winslow said, “We believe we must do more in the struggle to slow the rate of violent crimes, especially homicides. We hope by doubling the award more citizens will contact us with information, helping law enforcement solve more of these killings.”

CrimeStoppers began in 1983.
