Princess Onwubiko still hasn’t gotten a call back from her employer to return to work as a waitress since the pandemic led to her being laid off in March.

“I saw how the bills were starting to pile up and I didn’t have a source of income, so I was like I have to do something so I could keep the lights on because clearly, MLGW wasn’t cutting any slack at that time,” she said.

Economists say the job market was a lot worse in December than expected.

The Labor Department reported nonfarm payrolls dropped by 140,000 from the previous month.

Restaurants and bars were hit the hardest. Even though Onwobiko was forced to start her own company, she still misses her main source of income as a server.
