DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting, according to the district attorney.
A FOX13 crew went to the scene on Highway 269 at the Marshall County line late Sunday night. The exact time of the shooting is not known.
According to the District Attorney John Champion, the 76-year-old suspect caused a disturbance at three local restaurants where he also showed a weapon at all of them.
Investigators said he fired shots in the parking lot of Longhorn Steakhouse in Southaven around 10 Sunday night.
The suspect then went to Fazolis, where he held a pistol in the parking lot.
The three restaurants were Fazoli’s, Applebee’s and Longhorn Steak House.
A witness identified the car and an alert went out to officers.
Police said the man then showed up in the parking lot of an Applebees in Olive Branch shooting.
“It’s extremely tragic out I had no idea it happened but I mean wow you really gotta be careful out here,” said Melanie Hill from Southaven.
Deputies chased the suspect and eventually used a pit maneuver to stop the vehicle just south of I-269.
After the car stopped, he fired a shot at the deputies who returned fire. That’s when officers shot him multiple times killing him
There were seven deputies involved in the shooting. Those deputies are on leave with pay as the investigation into the shooting continues.
The suspect’s name has not been released.
Champion said the man was a military veteran with extreme mental illness.
“I think that if he was a mental veteran he could have got some help he probably has some mental issues going on at this time of year,” said Oscar Quinn from Southaven.
“This is time for celebrating and being with family not for things like things like this so I don’t know what it tells us,” said Champion.
