First day of classes presents some problems for SCS parents & students

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Nearly 100,000 Shelby County Schools students kicked off the school year virtually Monday morning. But the day was not smooth sailing for everyone.

“The line is busy. Everyone is probably calling. The system is going haywire right now,” said Ashley Carlisle, SCS Parent.

It’s the first day back to school for Shelby County Students, but Ashley Carlisle’s three kids were not present.

“My son has to get something on with high school. So I emailed the counselor about that. Hopefully, we will get a response. And I just have to get into Microsoft Teams,” said Carlisle.

Carlisle said this morning, SCS workers tried to help her fix the issues she faced, but they had no luck.

“I emailed Microsoft Teams as well. They said to email them if you’re having trouble. So I tried a lot of stuff this morning,” said Carlisle

Thousands of parents like Carlisle put their teacher hats on today. While others turned to the YMCA of Memphis and the Mid South for help.

“A lot of our parents in our community do have to work, so they need the extra support for their kids during the day,” said Ashley Smith Coleman.

The YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South says safety is a top priority. Each child is screened for COVID.

“Also we don’t allow parents past the front desk to limit the transfer of germs,” said Coleman.

Workers say enforcing safety measures was the easy part. Making sure each student was present by the beginning of school was a bit of a challenge.

“Any first-time experience there will be issues, but I think our team did a great job navigating those things,” said Coleman.

A successful first day in the eyes of the Y and their many partners.

“It’s really important that we provide that safe space for moms and dads who can trust the fact the Y staff is here in the church,” said Brian Maness, Colonial Park United Methodist Church.
