Former Southaven star takes baseball’s biggest stage

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The World Series is on FOX13. While the series features the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros, there is major interest right here in the Mid-South.

Braves’ third baseman Austin Riley grew up in Southaven and was a star at Desoto Central High.

FOX13 spoke to one man who said Riley’s success is a joy to watch.

”It’s amazing. I mean, I am a diehard Cubs fan, but with Austin being with the Braves, I root for the Braves. My daughter is 12 years old, and she isn’t big into sports, but every time Austin is on she wants to know what Austin is doing,” Michael Deaton said.

Michael Deaton said he has known Riley and his family since Riley was little.

”I knew Austin when he was 5, 6, and 7 years old. He was special then, and he is special now,” Deaton said.

Deaton said he watched Riley play ball here at Desoto Central. Deaton said the rising M-L-B star still keeps in close touch with him and his daughter.

”He treats her like family. You know, he signed a bat for her and signed a card. It’s just how awesome, how good he is for Desoto County. My sister teaches at Desoto Central and says how good a kid he was. It’s awesome, what he brings to Desoto County,” Deaton said.

Deaton said he’ll be tuned into FOX13 for every World Series game.

”My daughter and I will be watching at the house,” Deaton said.
