Faith International Ministries gave away free gas at Dodge’s, 1414 E. Broadway Ave.

The free fuel went to the first 100 cars, with a limit of $20 per car, according to event organizers.

The giveaway lasted from 10 a.m. to noon.

Customer Johnny Cross said the event was a blessing due to record-high gas prices.

He said $20 seems like a lot when you don’t have it.

A line of cars stretched around the block well before the start time.

The event was a direct response to the news of a Family Dollar warehouse closing in the community and recent layoffs at nearby Carvana.

The Family Dollar distribution center was home to hundreds of local employees.

Anthony King, pastor of Faith International Ministries, said over a dozen of those in the community around the church found themselves unemployed.

“When we got notice from quite a few families in our church, we knew we wanted to do something,” he said.

King said families are hurting due to high prices for gas and food.

“Right now the economy is challenging,” he said.

Regina Bindon, who had gas put in her tank, said the giveaway was “better than nothing.”

She said the $20 equated to a little less than half a tank for her car.
