Grass fire temporarily stops traffic on Highway 51

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A grass fire off Highway 51 stopped traffic for a short time Wednesday evening because drivers couldn’t see due to the smoke.

The fire started around 5:30 p.m. and burned on ten acres of land off Highway 51 north of North Watkins Street.

Crews from both the Shelby County Fire Department (SCFD) and Millington Fire Department responded, according to Brent Perkins with SCFD.

Visibility was so bad at one point that north and southbound traffic on Highway 51 had to be stopped.

The fire was brought under control around 6:20 p.m. and knocked down about an hour later.

Fire investigators are working to find out what started the fire.

It’s currently unclear whether the recent heat wave and dry conditions played a part in igniting the blaze.
