Victim in fatal shooting at Memphis apartments was 17 years old, family says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Another teenager shot and killed by gun violence in Memphis. Family members and neighbors said the victim was only 17 years old.

The 17-year-old was killed at the abandoned Astro Airways Villa Apartments.

Residents said they are fed up with the violence that happens in the community.

“He ain’t the first baby that got killed in here. They need to shut these apartments down,” said a family member of the victim.

Shots were fired in the 2300 block of Pendleton Street in Memphis late Wednesday night.

The shooting took the life of a 17-year-old boy.

“He used to help clean up the apartments. He used to work for these apartments too. He respected the elderly and the elderly respected him,” said a community member.

Since the Astro Airways Villa apartments have been vacant, crime has increasingly become violent in the past few years.

According to data from Memphis Police, there have been 97 reports of crime in a quarter mile radius made around the complex in the last six months.

These crimes include homicides, aggravated assault, car theft, domestic violence, possession of drugs and more.

“And now I got to deal with a death of a child because y’all don’t want to close these damn apartments down,” said a family member of the victim.

Police have not yet released the name of the victim as their investigation continues.
