Hardeman County Correctional Facility remains on lockdown after 1 inmate killed, another injured

WHITEVILLE, Tenn. — Hardeman County Correctional Facility in Whiteville, Tenn. remains on lockdown Wednesday following two separate altercations involving inmates, a CoreCivic spokesperson confirmed.

One inmate was killed, and another was injured in two separate incidents Tuesday afternoon. Whether the incidents were related is under investigation.

Staff was notified of an assault involving two Tennessee Department of Correction inmates just before 1 p.m. Tuesday. One inmate was injured. The inmate was airlifted to an outside hospital for treatment. The inmate was released from the hospital and returned to the facility Wednesday.

A second assault involving three to four TDOC inmates happened about 15 minutes later.

Staff found one inmate injured and unresponsive. Emergency first aid and life-saving procedures were performed until medical staff and EMS arrived. EMS responded to the facility, but the inmate died at the scene.

A CoreCivic spokesperson said the Tennessee Department of Corrections was immediately notified.

TDOC’s Office of Investigations and Conduct, with assistance from the Whiteville Police Department, is investigating the incidents.
