'He was out here just relaxing, being a kid’; Family grieving the death of 12-year-old

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Westwood family is hurting after a 12-year-old child was killed in the driveway of his home Monday night.

The child’s death gave the city of Memphis 229 homicides for 2020, surpassing the grim mark set in 2016.

Jedarius Fleming told FOX13 the gunman killed his nephew Dontavious Davis in the driveway of his home.

“Innocent bystander had a whole football in his hand. Died with a whole football in his hand. He was out here just relaxing being a kid like a kid is supposed to be,” Fleming said.

Memphis Police say the gunman shot the 12-year-old boy and a man in the 700 block of Crillion Drive.

The man went to the hospital in critical condition by private vehicle.

The child went to Le Bohner Children’s Hospital where he later died.

Memphis Police released limited information about the suspect, only saying they got away in a white SUV.

Fleming said he will continue to get one simple message across while relieving a harsh moment he will never forget.

“Man, your uncle love you for life, know that. You died in my arms. Your uncle love you. Your uncle love you for life,” Fleming said.
