WATCH: Health department traces many COVID infections among young people back to youth sports

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Since the start of the pandemic, more than 41,000 people in Shelby County have been infected with the coronavirus.

People under 18 currently make up nearly 10 percent of COVID-19 cases in Shelby County. The health department said that percentage is trending upward.

“What’s happening in the schools is a direct reflection of what is happening in the community,” said Shelby County Health Department Alisa Haushalter.

The health department traced many COVID-19 infections among young people back to youth sports.

“Any sport or extracurricular activity where there is close proximity where people are not wearing masks, they pose a risk,” said Haushalter.

Health leaders are calling on parents to make the right decision for their kids.
