MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A local basketball coach and teacher has been arrested for sexual battery.

Wesley Henning, 59, was arrested and charged with a felony offense of sexual battery from an incident that occurred in April, police said.

Henning is the men’s basketball coach and a teacher at Ridgeway High School.

The victim told police that on April 17, she went to the 2000 block of Ridgeway Rd. to assist Henning.

It was then Henning came up behind her, massaged her shoulders and pressed his pelvis against her, according to the affidavit.

As she walked away, Henning asked if he could touch her and she said no, the affidavit said.

The victim then advised Henning laughed and purposely touched her on her thigh several times as he walked past her, police said.

Henning was asked to come to the Sex Crimes officer for further questions on May 22, but declined to give a statement, according to the affidavit.

He was arrested and booked into 201 Poplar.

Henning was released on his own recognizance and his first court appearance is set for Tuesday at 9 a.m.

The Shelby County Schools released a statement:

Wesley Henning, Ridgeway HS teacher, was placed on administrative leave on April 22, 2020, pending the outcome of an investigation for an allegation of inappropriate contact with a former student. Due to an ongoing police investigation, we cannot provide further comment.
