Hurricane Ian: 3-day event fills vans with supplies for hurricane victims

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three days, three locations, and three opportunities to help people affected by Hurricane Ian.

Big League Movers and Your Wise Choice are hosting a three-day hurricane assistance event Oct. 5-7.

Emergency supplies will be collected at three vans stationed in Memphis.

The vans will deliver supplies to officials of Move For Hunger and the Florida Gulf Coast to Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The nonprofits will distribute the donations to help the nearly 2,600 hurricane victims who’ve sought refuge in Red Cross shelters and the nearly 206,000 people in need of food or clothing.

Locations and times are listed below:

Oct. 5 - 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 6363 Poplar Ave.

Oct. 6 - 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 2795 Hwy. 51, Nesbit, Miss.

Oct. 7 - Noon to 7 p.m., U of M Tiger Lane Fountain, 450 Early Maxwell Blvd.

Needed supplies are:

Shoes or sandals



Sports bras, socks, and underwear

Diapers, bottles, formula

Non-perishable food and snacks

Children’s bookbags

Toothbrushes, toothpaste


Deodorant, hand sanitizers

Shampoo, hairbrush

Feminine products

Cases of water

Flashlights, batteries

First aid kits

Unfortunately, scammers are also trying to benefit from the goodwill of people looking to donate to those impacted by Hurricane Ian.

The FBI field office in Memphis warned people to be cautious of these charity and disaster scams, urging people to protect themselves by donating via a check or credit card.

If the person you are donating to asks for cash, a gift card or a wire transfer, you should be suspicious.
