“I caught a body” Man arrested after shooting leaves one dead, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in July.

On July 29, Raymond Gaters was found outside his home at Asa Drive around 10:20 p.m., unresponsive and suffering from what appeared to be one gunshot wound to the lower torso, police said.

Gaters was pronounced deceased by MFD paramedics on the scene, police said.

The victim’s car, a Ford Freestar van, was stolen, police said.

According to police, the victim’s death was later ruled a homicide by the regional medical examiner.

On July 30, Memphis Police made the scene in the 3400 block of S. Third Street where the victim’s car was recovered.

Investigators recovered video and prints from the car that showed Marlon Jones, 21, in possession of the car, an affidavit said.

From the video, several witnesses were identified.

The investigators located two juvenile witnesses and they both gave statements.

One witness told police that Jones said he shot a man and another witness told police that they saw Jones holding the gun the night the victim shot.

That witness also advised that they saw Jones fighting with the victim to take his vehicle when the witnesses heard the shot, the affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, this witness also advised Jones stated, “I caught a body.”

Jones was questioned at the homicide bureau where he gave a statement admitting to being on the scene the night of the homicide and occupying the victim’s car.

Jones is charged with first-degree murder and is due in court on Monday.
