MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Is the fast-food chain Whataburger coming back to Memphis?
A tweet by an unverified account called Whataburger Memphis hints that it is.
People were overjoyed with the possibility.
“Honestly, I think it would go over really well here,” said Sara Corum, Whataburger fan. “We eat a lot of red meat, so it’s good.”
Whataburger confirmed to Business Journal that the San Antonio based chain was looking to open restaurants in Tennessee and in Kansas City but they did not confirm if they were eying Memphis.
In the article, the spokesperson only said that they were looking to add a location in Tennessee.
"With everything going on right now, the pandemic, COVID, Whataburger coming here would be a good idea," said Timmirra Thomas, Whataburger fan.
While many people have returned to work around the region, many people continue to file new unemployment claims each week.
“Any opportunity to hire people who were laid off at the beginning of the pandemic is a good idea,” Corum said. “People are looking and need it.”
Whataburger possibly coming back to Memphis was seen by some as light at the end of a dark tunnel.
“I think we’re starting to learn we can’t go back to the way things were,” Corum said. “We have an opportunity to move ahead. Try something new and adapt.”
FOX13 reached out to Whataburger Corporate and they said:
“We are excited to hear we have so many fans in Tennessee, and we are looking to open restaurants here as part of our future expansion plan. At this time, we have no specific plans to announce a restaurant in Memphis but will be happy to share when – and if – the time is right. In the meantime, we’re proud to offer exceptional food and service at our more than 830 locations across 10 states. Whataburger’s signature sauces, grocery products and popular retail items are available for purchase on Whataburger.com. We hope our fans will think of us the next time they’re shopping online.”
